Music As a Second Language

In Biblical times, men gathered as one to build a tower so high that it would reach the heavens. According to the book of Genesis, they all spoke the same language but while the Tower of Babel was being built, God brought confusion among the people. They were no longer able to understand one another, therefore disrupting their unity. Could one draw the conclusion that music is man’s way of regaining that unity in a quest for a universal language?

I sat down with two young musicians who had never met each other until today. Lukas and Kyle are both passionate guitarists.

Q: Where are you from?

Lukas: I’m from Germany.

Kyle: I’m South African, born and bred.

Q:  Do you consider music a substitute for communication or a way to relate to those who you’d otherwise have nothing in common with?
